Kanata
Baptist Church sponsored this 96 unit $9.73 million
mixed apartment and townhouse non-profit housing project
designed by architect Ralph VandenBerg and built by Domicile
Construction. Together with Gladys Baart, a real estate
salesperson with Century 21, we helped the Church to assemble
the parcel from a variety of owners, including the City
of Kanata, the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton
and the Church itself. We then had to encourage a builder
to develop an adjacent parcel in order to expedite servicing
the site. Construction commenced in the fall of 1993,
but our problems were not over.
One
bitterly cold night in January, a hitchiker from New Zealand
took shelter in one of the partially framed townhouses
and set a small fire for warmth. When the Kanata Fire
Department left the frozen site the next morning, three
blocks of townhouses had been destroyed! Despite this
setback, the contractor was able to finish the project
in time for occupancy in June, 1994. The project was a
real testament to the strength of a vision and to the
dedication of a determined and capable team to make it
a reality.
